Edge Protection Nets – EN 1263-1 System U
AGS edge protection nets are EN 1263-1 System U nets fixed vertically to a supporting frame, posts or scaffold. Installed along open edges of slabs, roofs and stairs, an edge protection net stops people and materials from falling over the edge in the first place.

What System U is
EN 1263-1 defines System U as a safety net fixed to a supporting framework for vertical use. Instead of catching a person after a fall, the vertical net forms a barrier at the edge. It is light, lets light and wind through and can be installed over long edges quickly.
The net alone is not the whole system: it needs posts, scaffold tubes or a frame that can take the loads. Temporary edge protection systems are covered by EN 13374, which sets three classes depending on the roof slope and the forces involved. Choose the frame to suit the class your site needs, and we will supply the net to fit it.
Where edge protection nets are used
Every open edge where a person can fall more than a short height needs protection. On building sites this means slab edges during frame construction, roof perimeters, stair openings, lift shafts and the open sides of scaffolds. Vertical nets are popular because they close the whole height of the opening, so tools and materials cannot slip under a guardrail.
Nets made to your edge
We manufacture System U nets in standard heights and to the exact height of your frame, in any length. The border ropes are fitted top and bottom, and the vertical edges are finished so the net can be tied to posts without gaps. Nets are knotless, UV-stabilised and labelled. For dust and fine debris, add scaffold netting or a debris net behind the safety net.
Edge protection or bracket nets?
Edge protection prevents the fall; System T bracket nets and System S nets catch a fall that has already happened. Where possible, prevention comes first. Where an edge cannot be closed, for example during roof sheeting or formwork, catching nets are used. The guide to the four EN 1263 systems compares them side by side.
Applications
- Open slab edges during frame construction
- Roof perimeters during roofing works
- Stair openings, lift shafts and floor openings
- Sides of scaffolds and working platforms
- Loading bays and temporary access routes
Choosing the right net
| Edge protection net (System U) | Guardrail only | Bracket net (System T) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stops the fall at the edge | Yes | Yes | No, catches it |
| Retains materials | Yes | Partly (toe board) | Yes |
| Needs posts or frame | Yes | Yes | Needs brackets |
| Visibility | Open, light | Open | Outside the building |
Installation
- Install posts, scaffold tubes or a frame strong enough for edge protection loads along the whole edge.
- Fix the top and bottom border ropes of the net to the frame at the spacing given in the installation guide.
- Fix the vertical edges so there is no gap at the posts or at the ends of the run.
- Close the gap between the bottom of the net and the slab so materials cannot slide out.
- Check the tension: the net should not bulge outwards under hand pressure.
Inspection, maintenance and service life
- Check the net and every fixing before each shift.
- Replace the net if meshes are cut, if the border rope is damaged or after a heavy impact.
- Do not use the net as a hoisting point or to store materials.
- Keep nets out of direct sunlight in storage between projects.
Frequently asked questions
Is a System U net the same as a guardrail?
No. A System U net is a safety net fixed vertically to a supporting frame. Together with the frame it forms edge protection. Many sites combine a top guardrail with a net below it.
Which standard applies to edge protection systems?
The net is made to EN 1263-1, System U. Temporary edge protection systems as a whole are covered by EN 13374, which defines classes A, B and C depending on the slope and the expected loads.
Can edge nets be reused?
Yes, if they are inspected and undamaged. Store them dry and out of sunlight between projects.
Do you make nets in custom heights?
Yes. Heights and lengths are made to the edge you need to protect.
