Safety Nets

Facade Protection Nets for Buildings

AGS facade protection nets are fixed over the face of existing buildings to hold back loose stone, tiles, plaster and cladding panels until the facade is repaired. They protect pedestrians, vehicles and neighbouring property below, and buy time to plan the repair safely.

When a facade needs a net

Facades age. Fixings of stone and ceramic cladding corrode, render loses its bond, bricks crack after an earthquake. When pieces start to fall, the area below has to be closed until the facade is repaired, which can take months. A facade protection net holds the loose material in place, so pavements, entrances and car parks can stay in use while the repair is planned.

Designed for the building

Every facade net is made to measure. We work from photographs, elevations or a site survey, mark the zones at risk and agree the fixing points with the owner. The mesh is chosen by the size of the pieces that must be held: a finer mesh for tiles and plaster, a larger one for stone blocks. Colours are matched to the facade so the building does not look wrapped.

Facade nets, scaffold netting and debris nets

A facade net is fixed to the building itself, close to the surface, and can stay for a long time. Scaffold netting is fixed to a scaffold during works and comes down with the scaffold. Debris nets catch objects falling from above, usually horizontally. On a repair project, all three may be used in sequence.

Applications

  • Stone and brick facades of historic buildings
  • Ceramic and natural stone cladding with failing fixings
  • Plaster and render that is spalling above walkways
  • Industrial buildings, chimneys and towers
  • Earthquake-damaged buildings awaiting assessment

Installation

  1. Survey the facade and mark the areas at risk and the structure available for fixings.
  2. Agree mesh, colour and fixing layout; prepare elevations with the net panels.
  3. Install anchors and a perimeter wire rope, usually with rope access or a lifting platform.
  4. Hang and tension the nets panel by panel, closing joints and edges.
  5. Record the installation and set an inspection interval.

Inspection, maintenance and service life

  • Inspect nets and fixings at regular intervals and after storms or earthquakes.
  • Remove fallen pieces from the bottom of the net so the load does not build up.
  • Replace UV-degraded or damaged panels.
  • Remember the net is a temporary measure until the facade is repaired.

Frequently asked questions

Is a facade net a permanent solution?

No. A facade net holds loose material until the facade is repaired. It can stay in place for months or longer if inspected, but the cause must still be fixed.

Will the net be visible?

Nets are made in colours that match the facade and are tensioned close to the surface, so they are discreet from street level.

How is the net fixed without damaging the building?

Fixings are planned with the building owner; on historic buildings we keep anchors to joints and agreed points.

Can you survey our building?

Yes. Send photographs and elevations first; we will advise on whether a survey is needed.
