Safety Nets

Stairwell and Atrium Safety Nets for Buildings

AGS stairwell safety nets close the open void in the middle of a staircase or below an atrium gallery in finished buildings. Made to measure in discreet colours, they stop people and objects falling between floors in schools, shopping malls, hotels, offices and public buildings, without closing the space or blocking the light.

Why stairwell voids need protection

Many staircases are built around an open void, and many shopping centres and hotels are designed around a multi-storey atrium. They are attractive spaces, but they also allow people and objects to fall several floors. A child leaning over a handrail, a phone dropped from the third floor, an intentional jump: a net stretched across the void at the lowest practical level reduces these risks without changing the architecture.

Made to measure, not cut on site

Every void is different. We start with a survey or a drawing, agree the layout and the fixing points with the building owner, and produce the net to the exact shape of the opening. Border ropes are fitted in the factory, so the net arrives ready to fix. Fixings are chosen for the structure: anchors in concrete, clamps on steel, or a wire rope perimeter where the net must stay clear of walls and finishes.

Choosing mesh and colour

The mesh size decides what the net holds back. A 100 mm mesh is open and almost invisible from below. A 60 mm mesh also stops larger objects. In schools, smaller meshes are usually chosen so children cannot climb through. Colours are chosen to disappear against the building: black against dark interiors, white or grey in bright atriums.

Our article on stairwell and atrium nets in schools and malls covers the choice in more detail, including what building managers usually ask before approving an installation.

During construction and after handover

During construction, open stairwells and lift shafts are protected with System S safety nets or edge protection nets. After handover, permanent stairwell nets take over. Both can be supplied for the same project.

Applications

  • Stairwell voids in schools, universities and dormitories
  • Atrium galleries in shopping malls and hotels
  • Light wells and open voids in office buildings
  • Hospitals, libraries and public buildings
  • Industrial buildings with open mezzanine edges

Installation

  1. Survey the void: dimensions, structure available for fixings, ceiling and floor finishes.
  2. Agree the net layout, mesh and colour, and prepare an installation drawing with fixing points.
  3. Install anchors or a wire rope perimeter to the structure at the agreed spacing.
  4. Fit the made-to-measure net and tension it evenly so it sits flat and discreet.
  5. Check every fixing and hand over the installation record to the building manager.

Inspection, maintenance and service life

  • Inspect the net and fixings visually at regular intervals set by the building manager.
  • Remove objects that have fallen into the net.
  • After an impact or vandalism, have the net and fixings inspected before re-use.
  • Plan a periodic professional inspection of anchors and tension.

Frequently asked questions

Will a stairwell net look out of place?

No. Nets are made in black, white, grey or a colour matched to the interior and tensioned flat, so they are hardly noticeable from a distance.

Which mesh is best for schools?

For schools and buildings used by children, a smaller mesh is usually chosen so that children cannot climb through and fewer objects pass. We recommend the mesh after the survey.

Can you make nets for irregular voids?

Yes. Every stairwell and atrium net is made to measure from a site survey or drawing, including curved and irregular openings.

Is fire behaviour documented?

Fire classification can be supplied on request. Tell us the requirement of your fire safety consultant.
