Safety Nets

System V Safety Nets for High-Rise Construction

The AGS System V safety net is an EN 1263-1 net with a border rope, hung from gallows-type supports fixed to the floor slabs of a building under construction. It protects the edge of the working floor and the floor below, and is lifted floor by floor as the frame rises.

  • EN 1263-1 System V
  • High-rise frames
  • Moved floor by floor
  • Knotless mesh

How System V protects a high-rise frame

On a concrete frame tower, the most dangerous place is the edge of the floor being built. Formwork, reinforcement and concrete work go on right at the edge, and the floor below is often still open. System V protects both: the net hangs from gallows arms fixed to the slab, rises above the working floor and is tied at the bottom to the floor below.

Because the arms are fixed in sockets in the slab edge, the whole system can be lifted floor by floor with the crane as the building rises. No scaffold is needed on the facade, which saves time and cost on tall repetitive buildings.

Planning a System V installation

System V nets are sized to the storey height and the spacing of the gallows arms. Before ordering, check:

  • the storey height and the slab thickness;
  • the spacing of the sockets along the perimeter and the corners of the building;
  • the height the net must rise above the working floor;
  • where the lower edge of the net will be anchored on the floor below;
  • the lifting sequence and how many floors are protected at the same time.

The fall height into the net and the clearance below it follow EN 1263-2. Our article on safety net fall height and clearance explains the limits.

Nets for repeated use

System V nets work hard: they are lifted dozens of times and exposed to concrete, welding sparks and weather. We make them from UV-stabilised knotless netting with a 100 mm mesh and a strong border rope, label each net to EN 1263-1 and include test meshes so the nets can be checked through the life of the project. Where small materials must be caught, a debris net can be added on the inside.

Applications

  • Concrete frame towers and residential high-rise blocks
  • Hotels, hospitals and office buildings with repeated floor plates
  • Car parks and multi-storey industrial buildings
  • Cores and shear walls with climbing formwork

Installation

  1. Cast or fix the sockets for the gallows arms in the slab edge at the spacing given by the support supplier.
  2. Insert the gallows arms and check that they are locked and can take the design load.
  3. Hang the net from the top of the arms with its border rope, and tie the lower edge to anchors on the floor below.
  4. Join adjacent nets so there are no gaps between them or at the corners of the building.
  5. Check that the top of the net is high enough above the working floor to catch a fall from the edge.
  6. Lift arms and nets to the next floor in sequence as the frame rises, and re-inspect after each lift.

Inspection, maintenance and service life

  • Inspect nets, ropes, arms and anchors before each shift and after each lift.
  • After an impact, remove the net from service until it has been inspected.
  • Remove concrete splashes and debris; they add weight and hide damage.
  • Test a test mesh at least every 12 months.
  • Replace nets that show cuts, burns from welding or heavy UV degradation.

Frequently asked questions

How does a System V net work?

The net hangs from gallows-type arms fixed to the slab. Its upper part rises above the working floor to stop falls from the edge, and its lower part is tied to the floor below, so a person falling into it is caught between the two levels.

How many nets do I need?

One net width per gallows spacing along the perimeter, usually for two levels at a time. Send the floor plan and storey height and we will calculate the quantity.

Can the same nets be used on every floor?

Yes. System V nets are designed to be lifted floor by floor. Inspect them after each lift and replace any damaged net.

Can you supply the gallows arms?

We manufacture the nets and ropes. Gallows arms and sockets can be supplied with the nets or provided by your formwork contractor.
